Wick is the place to be says local distillery boss
13/02/2002
The manager of Wick-based Old Pulteney, the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, has mounted a stout defence of the town which was criticised in the latest edition of the Lonely Planet Guide to Scotland for being ‘dismal’.
Distillery manager Fred Sinclair describes Wick as a marvellous place with a host of attractions, including the Old Pulteney visitor centre which has become a popular tourist magnet since it opened in 2000. ‘Wick is a superb tourist base surrounded by magnificent scenery in the nearby Flow Country and an imposing coastline. It offers walking, salmon fishing and excellent birdwatching. The town itself is steeped in maritime heritage and local businesses such as Old Pulteney have invested heavily in developing the local tourist infrastructure,’ he says.
‘We, for example, opened our new visitor centre nearly two years ago and the number of tourists it has attracted has soared. Wick is a great place to visit and you’re always sure of a friendly welcome and perhaps even a dram or two of a fine 12-year-old Old Pulteney!’
