Explore one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. The spirit crafted here is a distillation of this unique location.
The Pulteney Distillery was established in 1826 in the heart of 'Pulteneytown', the town created to house fishermen during Wick’s herring boom. One of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland, it has an absorbing history, passing through the hands of various owners. However, through the years the quality of the whisky has endured.
Remarkably, the hustle and bustle of Wick at the height of the 'Herring Boom' was captured on early colour film. Take a step back in time and view this extraordinary archive film.
The spirit of Old Pulteney is inseparable from the spirit of the town it calls home - Wick. The creation of the Wick's vast harbour and the accompanying settlement of Pultneytown in the early years of the 19th Century sparked a spectacular surge in herring fishing, the 'silver darlings' drawing over 1000 boats and some 7000 workers to the port. The herring fleets may be gone, but their spirit lives on.
