We’ve cemented our new partnership with Michelin Star chef Aiden Byrne with a special delivery of our 1989 Vintage – newly crowned the ‘World’s Best Single Malt’, one of the greatest accolades in the whisky business.

Inspired to create a dish to pair with this award-winning dram, Old Pulteney ambassador Aiden – chef at both Manchester House and The Church Green in Lymm – met with an immediate problem: the buzz created by the win meant that there wasn’t a drop of the 1989 to be found.

A search of the Distillery in the far north of Scotland and our Airdrie-based offices uncovered a single 5cl miniature of this precious liquid, and so we made it our mission to ensure that the last drop of the world’s best single malt whisky made the journey from Scotland to Lymm in a style befitting such a rare and valuable dram!

Michael Baty, one of our whisky packaging specialists, stepped up to the plate offering to personally chauffeur the miniature bottle to ensure it arrived safely in Aiden’s hands.  You can follow his journey on Twitter here #OldPulteneyMission.

Aiden Byrne commented: ‘This really was above and beyond the call of duty! We have a busy week ahead of tastings and food pairings for Old Pulteney and I didn’t want to miss out on including the 1989, which is now the world’s best single malt whisky. Well done to Michael for making sure this tiny bottle made it here safely and on time.’

Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage being crowned the ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at Whisky Magazine’s prestigious World Whiskies Awards is one of Old Pulteney’s greatest triumphs to date in the global industry. Our‘Maritime Malt’ released this peated Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage in September 2015 as the embodiment of Pulteney Distillery’s renowned craftsmanship. Its distinctive smoky character comes from maturation in hand-selected American oak ex-bourbon barrels, which previously held heavily peated malt.   Find out more about our collection of award-winning whiskies here.
